Biography:
The Struggle Against Silence was formed in January of 2004 by lead
singer/guitarist Nick Varney and drummer Ryan Hillestad. They were later
joined by a second guitarist, A.J. Ward. They played one show with this
lineup, then added bassist Josh Lewison and a third guitarist, Zach Boyle. The
quintet rehearsed for a summer, played a few shows, and went into a studio in
January of 2006, and recorded their debut EP With Nowhere Else To Go. The five
song disc clocks in under seventeen minutes, and provides a more
straightforward perspective on the bands music. The CD is an emotional roller
coaster, beginning with the darker Razors and Roses, bursting into their pop-
punk side with Ode to an Awkward Silence, a political rant in Stars and
Stripes for Now, a tribute to the great Kurt Cobain in Where You Want To Be,
and closing with the heartfelt Leslie.
As of lately, the band has been writing and rehearsing new music, which is
less straightforward, and more processed and thought out. Being influenced by
the likes of Chiodos, Emery, Park, and Brand New would lead you to believe
that TSAS sound would be getting heavier. And that's true. But this will not be
a completely different band when you hear their new material. Songs like The
Lullaby Sung from Silent Lips and Summer is the Best Season for Dying do
showcase the bands heavier side. But songs like Storybook Ending maintain the
bands lighter side, and their newest song, Flutter, seems to be a hybrid of
the two.
TSAS plans to do a lot of shows this summer, and a lot of writing. If all goes
as planned (and it never does), the band will have their debut full length out
by next May. But don't hold them to that. Pressure makes them nauseous.
